Mourinho brings Shevchenko in from the cold

LONDON (AFP) -- Jose Mourinho has given Andriy Shevchenko one more chance to prove he can be success at Chelsea by bringing the striker back for today's clash against Blackburn.

Shevchenko hasn't played for Chelsea since April due to a combination of injury and poor form. But Mourinho has included Shevchenko in his squad to face Rovers and the Ukrainian is certain to feature at some stage at Stamford Bridge.
It is possible the former AC Milan star's spell out in the cold would have continued but for injuries to Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard.
Shevchenko has played for his country this season without featuring for Chelsea. But Drogba has a knee problem that Mourinho confirmed will keep him out of Saturday's game, while Lampard is missing with a thigh tear.
Being deprived of the two players that supply Chelsea's main goal threat was bad enough, but Mourinho is also unsure if Claudio Pizarro will be in any condition to play as he was still returning from international duty with Peru on Friday.
At least Shevchenko is showing signs of form. He scored in Wednesday's defeat against Italy and Mourinho is ready to grant him a reprieve.
""With Drogba injured and with Pizarro still at this moment in the air on the way back to London the situation is not easy in attack,"" Mourinho said.
""We need everybody and it's good to have Shevchenko back. Sheva played two matches for his national team, the results were not good for his team but I saw the matches and especially in the second one I was happy with the way he performed.
""He is selected and he will have minutes. We need every player because we are starting the period where we are playing three competitions at the same time.""
If Shevchenko wants to persuade Mourinho to bring him back into the fold permanently, he will have to show his understanding of the Portuguese's football philosophy has improved.
Mourinho believes every player must sacrifice their ego for the greater good of the team. While Shevchenko's talent is undeniable, he hasn't always played with the desired passion and team-ethic to keep Mourinho happy.
""Sometimes it's not just about fitness,"" Mourinho said. Sometimes players have a great fitness situation and they are not performing well.
""I always say that a player is not just fitness, it's not just technique or tactical or psychological.
""A player is a whole and he needs to be good in every aspect because in the end it's just about perform and perform in relation to the coach's ideas and the team's philosophy.""
Mourinho, who watched a host of international matches including France, Italy, England and Portugal during the recent two week break, saw signs of improvement in Shevchenko's display against Italy.
""I think he's improving in every aspect. Against Italy he played a good game and not just because he scored the goal,"" he said.
""I think his contribution to the team was positive. He brought to his game some of the aspects I want him to bring to Chelsea.""
Mourinho was in typically sharp form as Chelsea on Friday unveiled a sponsorship deal with a company, Etihad Airways, whose name translates as United.
He was quick to poke fun at the link with reigning Premier League champions Manchester United, saying: ""To have success you need to be united. That is what I tell my team, so I am happy to be with United!
